DIVING IN THE CARRIBEAN: PROVIDENCIA 2019, ROSARIO ISLANDS AND DOMINICAN REPUBLIC 2022, ARUBA 2023

As part of wider trips from Medellin, Colombia I did some diving on Providencia Island in 2019, the Rosario Islands and the Dominican Republic in 2022, and Aruba in 2023. I each case we flew from Medellin to the destinations. The map below shows the locations of Medellin, Aruba, Cartagena (for Rosario Islands) and San Andres (for Providencia):

Providencia

We flew to San Andres, then transferred to nearby Providencia by small plane. The island was mountainous, covered in tropical rainforest and with just one road circling it. It was very laid back and not many tourists. We stayed in an AirBnB for a week and dived the waters nearby with Sonny’s Dive Shop.it was notable for the number of sharks

Rosario Islands

We flew to Cartagena, then transferred to the Rosario islands by fast boat a trip of about 45 minutes. We stayed at Isla del Sol for 3 days and Nick and I did a dive with Snorkel and Dive Club. The coral was ok, but there was hardly any fish life. The wreck of a submerged aircraft (an Aero Commander) was the highlight, although there was a multitude of snorkelers around it (including us, we didn’t use scuba)

Dominican Republic

Dale and I flew to Punta Cana and then caught a taxi to Bayahibe where we stayed at an AirBnB for four days during which time I did a couple of days diving with Scuba Fun, one of several dive shops. Diving included the wreck of the St George, and some nearby reefs. Despite a group of other divers, I was able to dive with only a guide from one of the two dive boats.

Aruba

We flew to Aruba and stayed a week at an AirBnB which had a private jetty and sea frontage. Nick and I did two days boat diving with JADS primarily on the wrecks of two airplanes and a ship.
